Is it worth fixing?
A rule of thumb, not a verdict. Ask for an honest comparison of the repair cost and the price of a new boiler before you decide.
Repair it when
- It is under about ten years old.
- The fault is one part and the part is still made.
- The repair costs well under a third of a new boiler.
- It has been reliable until now.
Replace it when
- It is 12 to 15 years old and breaking down more than once a year.
- Parts are no longer available.
- It is an old non-condensing model that wastes gas as hot flue gas.
- The repair costs close to a third of a new boiler.

From survey to handover
Survey and price
Andy looks at the boiler, the flue, the pipework and where the new one can go, recommends a type and output, and gives you a written price.
Out with the old
The old boiler comes out and the new one goes in. Andy fits a filter and cleans the system where it needs it.
Commission and handover
He tests the boiler, completes the commissioning record and shows you the controls before he leaves.

They fix more breakdowns than you would think, and they take five minutes.
Check the pressure
Most combi boilers want 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. Below 1 bar many lock out. Your manual shows how to top it up through the filling loop.
Check the power and the controls
Is the boiler switched on at the fused spur? Is the programmer on and the thermostat set higher than the room? Flat batteries in a wireless thermostat catch a lot of people out.
Reset once, no more
Press the reset button one time. If the fault returns, switch the boiler off and ring Andy. And if you don't have a carbon monoxide alarm, fit one.

Boiler questions
How long does a new boiler take to fit?
Most like-for-like combi swaps take one day. Moving the boiler, switching from a regular boiler to a combi, or adding a cylinder takes longer. Andy will tell you how long before you commit.
Should I choose a combi or a system boiler?
A combi suits a home with one bathroom and decent mains pressure. With two or more bathrooms, or low pressure, a system boiler with a hot water cylinder usually copes better because it can supply several taps at once.
Do I need a power flush with a new boiler?
Not always. Radiators that are cold at the bottom, a noisy system or black water point to sludge. A magnetic filter protects a new boiler either way, and Andy will say if the system needs cleaning first.
Is an annual boiler service really necessary?
A service finds small faults before they turn into a breakdown in January, and most manufacturers require one to keep the warranty valid. It is also when a gas engineer checks the boiler is burning safely.
