How the job runs

Six stages, in this order

Doing them in the right order is most of the skill. Waterproofing before tiling and testing before covering up are the two that matter most.

  1. Survey and design

Andy measures up and talks through the layout. Where the pipes and waste can go decides what is possible, so that comes before choosing the suite and tiles.

  2. Strip-out

The old suite, tiles and flooring come out back to the structure. Hidden problems show up here, and Andy tells you about them straight away.

  3. First fix

New pipework, waste and any heating changes go in behind the walls and under the floor, and get tested before anything is covered up.

  4. Waterproofing

Wet areas are tanked before a single tile goes on. In a wetroom, nothing else on the job matters as much.

  5. Tiling and finishing

Tiles first, then the suite, shower screen and furniture, with the silicone line finished properly.

  6. Second fix and handover

Taps, valves and the shower are fitted and tested. Andy walks you round, shows you the stopcocks and leaves the paperwork.

What moves the price

Where the money goes

  • Tiling. Floor and wall area, and tile size. Large-format tiles cost more to lay.
  • Moving things. Relocating the toilet, bath or shower means moving the soil pipe and waste.
  • Wetroom. Tanking and drainage across the whole floor.
  • Specification. The suite, taps and shower valve you choose.
  • Heating. Underfloor heating or a heated towel rail while the room is open.
  • Surprises. Rotten floorboards or old pipework found at strip-out.

How long will I be without a bathroom?

A standard bathroom typically takes one to two weeks. Andy sets out the order of work so you know which days the water is off. If it is your only bathroom, say so at the start so the plan allows for it.

What is tanking, and do I need it?

Tanking is a waterproof layer under the tiles. A wetroom needs it across the whole floor and walls. A standard bathroom needs it in the shower area and around the bath. Skipping it is how leaks end up in the ceiling below.

Can you change the heating at the same time?

Yes, and a bathroom refit is the cheapest moment to do it. With the floor and walls already open, adding a heated towel rail or underfloor heating costs far less than doing it later.

Do I have to buy the suite from you?

No. Choose your own suite and tiles, or ask Andy what he recommends at your budget. He will tell you if something you like is going to be awkward to fit.

Planning a new bathroom?

Tell Andy the size of the room and what you want. He rings back to arrange a visit.
