HomeAir conditioning

Air conditioning for the rooms that cook in July

Single-room units from £1,500, up to whole-house systems. Fitted in Morley, Gildersome, Churwell and across south Leeds.

Why now

2×

The number of UK homes with air conditioning has doubled in three years, to around four million. Brick houses hold heat, and a loft conversion or home office can be unusable for weeks in summer.

Systems

Pick the system by the number of rooms

Typical UK prices, installed.

One room
One indoor unit and one outdoor unit. Bedrooms, home offices and loft conversions.
£1,500 – £3,000
Three or four rooms
One outdoor unit feeding several indoor units, each with its own temperature control.
£3,500 – £7,000
Whole house
Ducted systems hidden in the ceiling or loft. These need a proper survey and depend on the building.
Up to £20,000

Heat as well as cool

An air conditioner is also a heat pump

The same unit that cools a bedroom in July can heat it efficiently in January, because an air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. When it is fitted as one by an MCS-certified installer, £2,500 of government grant can go towards it, for eligible homes.

The grant only goes through certified installers. Andy installs and registers grant-funded work with MCS-accredited Heat Pump Go, so the grant is available here too. The same rule applies to any installer you speak to: ask for the certificate number.

Refrigerant work is not a sideline here either. Andy holds F-Gas Category I (City & Guilds, December 2022), the qualification the law requires before anyone may install, service or decommission this equipment.

The survey

What Andy needs to know

  1. The rooms

Size, which way they face, and whether they sit under the roof. A south-facing loft needs more than a north-facing bedroom.

  2. The indoor unit

Where it can go so air reaches the room without blowing straight on the bed or the desk.

  3. The outdoor unit

A firm base with clear airflow, a short pipe run and a sensible distance from neighbours.

  4. The drain

Units make condensate in cooling mode. It needs a route to a drain or the outside.

Questions

Air conditioning questions

How much does air conditioning cost to install?

A single-room unit typically costs £1,500 – £3,000 fitted. Three or four rooms on one outdoor unit cost £3,500 – £7,000. Whole-house ducted systems run up to £20,000, depending on the building. The calculator gives you a range for your rooms.

Can an air conditioning unit heat as well as cool?

Most modern units do both. An air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump, so in winter it can heat the room efficiently. That is why some installations qualify for the £2,500 air-to-air grant when fitted by an MCS-certified installer. Grant-funded work at Brearley is installed and registered with MCS through Heat Pump Go, an MCS-accredited partner, so the grant is available; Andy will tell you where Brearley stands before you book.

How long does installation take?

A single-room unit is often done in a day. Multi-room systems and ducted systems take longer and start with a survey. Andy gives you a timescale in the quote.

Do I need an installer with an F-Gas certificate?

Yes. Anyone working on equipment that holds refrigerant must be F-Gas qualified, and it is worth asking to see the certificate before anyone touches your system. Andy holds F-Gas Category I in F Gas and ODS Regulations (City & Guilds), awarded December 2022 — the highest category, covering leak checking, recovery, installation, service and maintenance of equipment.

Will I hear it at night?

Modern inverter units run quietly, and most have a night mode that turns the fan down. Where the indoor unit sits matters: Andy will recommend a spot that is not directly over the pillow.
